The Sway of Spontaneity

What

would

you

be

like

if

there

was

nobody

else

in

the

world?

Who

would

you

be

if

the

only

opinion

that

mattered

was

yours?

~Quentin Crisp

If you know the word spontaneous, which arises from an unplanned action or a momentary impulse, you’ll understand my unusually long silence. I’m traveling. Just like that, I took to the road entrusted with dog, friend, maps, books-on-tape and arias to sing by while taking an impetuous sojourn up the coast to visit some long favored haunts: Mendocino, Carmel, Canon Beach, Bainbridge Island. A bit erratic, no reliable access and a severely challenged focus. Forgive my absence while taking a spontaneous moment of your own to ponder the wisdom of Quentin Crisp and the awe of Paul Himmel, photographer and late husband of the magnificent Lillian Bassman.

  1. Dear EA, It is surely those things which are carried out on the spur of the moment which bring such untold joy and happiness. For, not anticipated long in advance, they have no expectations to live up to and so are, therefore, an unqualified success. I do so very much hope that you will enjoy your ‘jolly’ and shall look forward to future postings on your return.

  2. OH how wonderful!!! I wish I was doing the VERY same =D travel safe dear!

  3. Dear EA, you are of course entitled to your own life, but you have to forgive your loyal groupies becoming a bit concerned and off-balanced when you disappear. It’s just that we miss your musings and delightful offerings!

    Bon retour!

  4. The music turned up, the wind on your face, the sound of the ocean (precious, ocean) in your ear, you go girl.

  5. You are a breath of fresh air.

  6. To answer the above questions….I would be on a never-ending exploration – one huge endless road trip. Lucky you. Enjoy!

  7. Dear EA, have a wonderful trip…Eilis

  8. Lovely thoughts to ponder as usual. Enjoy!

  9. Where are you? Please come back soon!

    • I miss you all and EA. Just a bit longer – probably after the 4th. It seems we could all use a bit of enchantment, no?

In the meantime, my head is full of all things Parisian; I do hope you are enjoying that magical place dearest John.

      au revoir

  10. What a lovely site. Of course, though I live in San Francisco, it required James Wolcott in New York to point the way here.

  11. Lovely page.
The photograph of the dancer at the bottom of your page is not Isadora Duncan, but rather is of Lori Belilove of NYC.
