The Age of Mass Intelligence

We’ve all heard about dumbing down. Forgive my silent sneer but I’m far beyond hearing about it; I frequently feel I’m living in the oppressive midst of it. In any event, new evidence suggests that the opposite is also true.Could this be? Is this, in fact, the age of mass intelligence?

This is such a heartening article. Not only is attendance up in museums, literary festivals, opera and the like, but reading is undergoing a resurgence. In the past two years: Oprah’s Book Club recommended Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina” and three novels by William Faulkner–good by any standard, and they all made the bestseller lists.

Could it be that we’re less shallow than we think we are?
