Michael Dweck “Mermaids”
The French have a saying: “Heureux Dans Sa Peau” that translates to happy in her skin. Photographer, Michael Dweck has captured that nymph-like quality by literally immersing himself in the underwater world of mermaids. These mythic creatures of legend have long fascinated artists and acted as muses. Lovely and aloof, bare but for their beautiful manes, they glide mysteriously in dark waters.
The play of light on water and swimmer, sparkling, bubbling, swirling is the heart of this work. Photographed on Long Island, Miami and Weeki Wachee Springs, Florida either behind glass, from above, or alongside the swimmer, Dweck creates a world of remote beauty enhanced by the beauty of water and light.
His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, French Vogue and Esquire, and his book Mermaids will be published in June 2008. This watery underworld exhibit is currently on display at Staley-Wise Gallery in Manhattan through September 6.
One of the best photography shows I have seen in years! Bravo to Dweck for his painterly images of the mythical sirens of the sea.
